Pashto is written in a Perso-Arabic script with letters that exist in no other language, so a font that handles Arabic and Urdu will still not render Pashto correctly. Dialects divide broadly between northern varieties around Peshawar and southern varieties around Kandahar, and the difference is audible rather than usually visible on the page. Pashto is not Dari, and the two are not interchangeable, though many Afghan documents contain both.

Much Pashto documentation is handwritten, scanned badly, or both. Photographs of documents taken on a phone are normal in this pair and we work with them. If a page is genuinely illegible we say so at quote stage rather than guess, because a guessed translation in an asylum file is worse than no translation at all.
