Urdu is written in Nastaliq, a style of the Arabic script that flows diagonally rather than sitting on a flat baseline. It is not the same as the Naskh style used for Arabic, and Urdu rendered in a Naskh font is instantly recognizable as wrong to any reader. We use Nastaliq. Urdu and Hindi are close enough in speech that speakers understand each other, and completely different on the page. If your document is going to India, you probably need Hindi. If it is going to Pakistan, you need Urdu.

Most software renders Nastaliq badly. Getting Urdu out of a scanned document and into a print-ready, embassy-acceptable file without breaking the letter joins is a real production problem, and it is one we solved years ago because we do it daily.
